The photo viewing mode has also been completely redesigned. Now it is horizontal, and to the right of the image there is a block with comments. In VK they called it a magazine layout, but all this reminds us of the photo viewer in Odnoklassniki (don’t even ask how we know this). But in fact, this is quite convenient, because now you can scroll through the comments while holding the image itself in front of your eyes.
Why was this particular format (horizontal) chosen? Most likely, to display better on widescreen monitors, which are the majority now.
Show notifications
In the header, next to the search bar, there is now a special icon that opens a pop-up window with all notifications. It has been made quite convenient, because now you can simultaneously watch notifications about new likes, friend requests, birthdays and other things while on the desired page. In general, from the outside it all looks quite beautiful. I really want to use VKontakte like this. Most likely, this is due to the fact that the previous design has become boring, but here is something new.
Minor changes in other categories
Of course, the design has been redone everywhere (even in the settings), but it’s also worth noting that the font and page width have been increased. Now (in theory this is true) the site should look more attractive on widescreen monitors. The sections in the left column have also been swapped. In the summer of 2014, VKontakte invited developers to take part in a competition for a new design: more than 500 people took part in the competition. Among hundreds of entries, the top five were selected, the winners were awarded MacBook Pro laptops with the maximum configuration, and four more received incentive prizes in the form of an iPad Air.
Despite the fact that the competition was quite large-scale, the social network did not announce specific dates and did not specify whether the participants’ works would be used if the appearance of the site was changed.
Developers have caught on to the trend towards “flat” design quite a long time ago - the VK Developers section, even before large-scale changes, was more like a version of the site for applications and was already using the free space around the edges for its intended purpose.
